You see, fat is really just stored energy that your body is saving for winter. When you eat too many calories and don't burn them off during the day, your body will store them just in case it needs them later (we're very efficient like that!)

So in a sense, if you burn up the stored energy (fat) you've got by building muscle, I like to think of that as turning fat into muscle.

Anyway, now we've got that out of the way, how can you actually lose fat and gain muscle at the same time? Here's a few quick tips.

* Train hard. Training in the gym burns calories and builds muscle. Having more muscle on your body means you'll naturally burn more calories throughout the day, leading to increased fat loss. It's a snowball effect - the more muscle you gain, the more fat you lose.

* Variety. Keep your body guessing. Don't let it get accustomed to one style of training, or to a particular diet. The harder it has to work, the more it will pay off in the long run.

* Get your diet right. It's imperative to eat properly. That means high protein, moderate carbs and plenty of good fats (not chocolate, I mean nuts, avocado, olive oil and so on). Plenty of water too!

In all honesty though, I think that having a proper, tried and tested, proven system for fat loss and building muscle is very important if you really want to achieve your goals.

If you thought it was impossible to get ripped AND build muscle at the same time... you thought wrong.

Losing fat and gaining muscle IS possible. And it's not only possible, it's easy to do too!

Effectively cutting fat and building muscle is a combination of 3 things, in my humble opinion. These three things combined together give you the best chance of success.

1) Effective eating - you've obviously got to eat right. Now that doesn't necessarily mean cutting out all sugars, fats and other enjoyable foods, but it means eating them in moderation at the right time.

In general you need to eat LESS calories. That way your body will go into an energy deficit and turn to your long term fat stores for energy. As it burns up the fat - you lose fat, gain muscle and get ripped!

One easy way of cutting calories is to switch everything in your diet for the light, sugar free or diet version. You'd be amazed how many calories that cuts out of your daily intake.

2) Effective training - and obviously you've got to train right too. Eating right will take care of the fat loss, but you've got to hit the gym in order to build muscle!

Effective training means using the right weight, the right number of reps, doing the right exercises with good and proper form, getting the right amount of sleep to let your body repair itself and following a decent training program.

3) Effective monitoring - lastly you've GOT to track and measure your progress, otherwise how do you know whether it's working or not? How do you know whether you need to reduce your calories a bit more or change up your workout routines?

But all of this can be rather confusing. If you want to take the guess work out of getting ripped, I would urge you to take instruction from a professional. That doesn't mean paying hundreds or thousands of dollars for your local personal trainer though...
